Whew…

July 2nd, 2008 neteng

Hey everyone. I apologize for my extended absence. As you know from my previous post, I started a new position a couple of weeks ago. As with any new job, there is so much to learn. Not only from a technical standpoint, but also from an administrative angle. Every company and industry have a different way of doing things, whether it be due to regulations or just general company policy. The company I’m currently working at places a heavy emphasis in documentation and change control. Before you’re allowed to do many things, you must be ‘trained’ on them through official channels. Needless to say, things have been slow going but I’m looking forward to coming up to full speed!

Also needless to say, I am exhausted when I get home from work and lose any motivation to hit the Cisco books. I did start work on the MPLS Traffic Engineering article though and I do plan to finish it. As they say though, “It will just be a matter of time.”

You’ll hear from me, and hopefully soon. To those in American, have a safe and fun Independence Day weekend.

Fellow Blogger gets his Number!

April 30th, 2008 neteng

Let’s all give a round of applause for the effort put forth by Ethan Banks at CCIE Candidate for passing on his first go! If you’ve been reading his blog (and I’m sure you have), you know he’s been studying hard and keeping us up to date on every bit of minutiae he encounters on his journey. His entries are very informative and Ethan sets a great example for all current and future CCIE candidates. Congratulations Ethan!

Cisco Application eXtension Platform

April 17th, 2008 neteng

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps9701/index.html

The Cisco Application eXtension Platform (AXP) enhances the capabilities of the Cisco ISR by enabling a tighter integration between the branch network, IT and application infrastructure. The Cisco AXP further lowers TCO by providing an open Linux based platform to develop and host custom and third party applications directly on the Cisco ISR.

I just heard about this unique feature being provided by Cisco. I’m excited to see what possibilities can be realized with this powerful tool. But as always, in the wrong hands, I can see this creating myriad problems with buggy code and security holes!

I wanted to share this bit of news with other folks that hadn’t gotten wind of it.

Where He Goes, No One Knows

March 13th, 2008 neteng

So I was in the midst of preparing to transition to a new client and do some travel…and then all hell breaks loose at another client and I’m asked to come in and fight fires. To say I have been busy is an understatement! Please excuse the lack of updates for now, but I promise I have not disappeared for good. I finally have Internet access at work and was able to post this (well, I guess I could have posted it from home in the evenings, but my brain is fried come 7:00PM).

Thanks for your continued readership and comments, everyone.

Cisco Aggregation Services Router (ASR 1000)

March 4th, 2008 neteng

 ASR 1000

It’s been announced, if you haven’t heard. Cisco has unveiled it’s latest routing hardware: ASR 1000. These routers run IOS XE over Cisco’s new QuantumFlow processor. It allows software-only application upgrades to enable things like application accelerators, IDS, etc. without needing to purchase separate hardware modules. Very interesting…and very pricey, starting at $35,000.

Cisco Technological Breakthrough?

February 28th, 2008 neteng

Joe Haris, of 6200networks.com has a very interesting post here, about a big announcement coming from Cisco on March 5th. Now this could be some major marketing hype, but I found it interesting and thought others may as well!

Not My Month

February 21st, 2008 neteng

It just hasn’t been my month! I’ve been fighting some sort of cold for the past week and then had some catastrophic data loss yesterday due to a failed drive (let this be a lesson to me…nightly backups). I’ll be working on recovering that tonight. Just wanted to keep you folks up to date on my status. I will get back on the article-writing horse one of these days, I promise!

Thanks for understanding,

R.I.P. Pix?

January 23rd, 2008 neteng

RIP PIX

I was just informed that in an effort to push their new ASA 5580 series security appliances, Cisco will be announcing the End of Sale of the PIX on January 28th. I would just like to say a few words…

“PIX. Sometimes you were a pain in the butt. Sometimes you wouldn’t cooperate with the rest of the network. But you were always there. When you did come through, you came through in spades! You will be missed.”
