Good morning everyone. I’ll be winding down on my final week here at my current employer. I’m crossing my fingers that the client will let have a couple days off as I jump right into the new position next Monday.

• FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) or wireless, which is more cost-effective? - A brief look at the current offerings of these two technologies.
• Airlines look to in-flight broadband - I would gladly pay a small fee to enjoy this service.
• T-Mobile sues Starbucks over AT&T Internet deal - Yikes, Starbucks is already starting to feel some financial pinches…now this?

• Game Developer CCP to Improve Services for Players of the World’s Largest Multiplayer Online Game With Cisco Data Center Virtualization Technology - What a headline! But I thought it would be of interest to the gamers among us.
• Google, Microsoft Fight to Take TV White Space for Beyond Wi-Fi - It’s a broadband space race!

• Cisco Sales Top Lowered Forecast, and Profit Declines - Requisite Cisco quarterly financial information.

• Cisco expected to report 10% revenue rise - Despite a shaky economy, people still need technology to operate.
• Juniper Networks Named Networking Vendor of the Year 2008 - Juniper getting some props in the Middle East!
• Interop: Broadcom Says 40 Gbps Ethernet Coming Soon - The technology train keeps on chugging along!
• WiMax Chip Production Jumps - Another exciting development coming to fruition…

Try not to stress out this week at work, folks… I know I’ll be trying hard.

• Cisco, AT&T Look To Expand High-End Video-Conference System - News on Cisco’s cool telepresence product.
• Riverbed seems to be cleaning Cisco and Juniper’s clocks - Not surprised!
• AT&T: Internet to hit full capacity by 2010 - Sounds like scare tactics for some investment money…
• Cisco -1,000,000 Certification Milestone Reached - A little old, but I didn’t notice this press release before.

Monday Morning Networking - 4/7/2008

Off to another week of fresh adventures!

•  Riverbed just another has-been competitor to Cisco - Now, I don’t know who came up with this snarky little title, but I’ve seen Riverbed’s appliances run head-to-head against Cisco WAAS, and it blew the WAAS to shreds. This is one area that Cisco just doesn’t seem to have dominance in yet (and I’m quickly discovering that this also applies to Wireless).
• Cisco Slips As Anayst Downgrades - Whoops. Looks like Cisco is facing some demand issues in this soft market as well.
• 2009 could be boom year for new wireless technology - Femto-wha?? Never heard of it…
• ISPs Hog Rights in Fine Print - The Internet is not owned and operated solely by your ISP. Shocker!

A little late, but better late than never:

• CCIE Routing and Switching Labs Open on the Weekends - Great news for those trying to squeeze into a lab seat.
• Coming Soon: The Cisco Blade Server? - Seems like Cisco is dipping their fingers into more and more pies lately.
• Is CCIE pay slipping compared to other certifications? - This seems very generalized. From my experience, CCIEs are still commanding a better-than-average salary.
• Where’s Cisco With Wireless N? - Cisco’s take on the fairly enterprise-fresh 802.11n standard.

• Satellite May Spread 1.2 Gbps Speeds Across Japan - I wonder if I can leach off this from California…
• Cisco Security Conversion Tool (SCT) — Easing the pain of a Check Point to Cisco firewall migration - May be useful for some readers here.
• Cisco, Duke To Boast World’s Largest 802.11n Network - Sheesh. I’m still running 802.11G at home.

Monday Morning Networking - 2/11/2008

Hello everybody. My apologies for the lack of FMF on Friday. I took a vacation day and spent an extended weekend in Parker, Arizona. The weather was great and it was very relaxing. It was my first real vacation since my CCIE lab and it felt fantastic. On to today’s networking news:

• Cisco targets services sector for growth - Lots of first-party hardware companies appear to be focusing there efforts on this.
• Yahoo says Microsoft offer undervalues company - Not really networking, per se, but interesting nonetheless.
• Report: Motorola, Nortel in wireless infrastructure talks - Two pretty good-sized companies. Could give them more leverage with new and existing customers.
• What those oceanic cable cuts mean to you - This has been a conspiracy theorist’s dream as of late. I think it was just giant sea rats chewing through the cable.

Monday Morning Networking - 2/4/2008

Welcome back to the daily grind. It was a good weekend, but tiring. Excellent Superbowl game. I haven’t followed football in quite awhile, but the underdog win was fantastic. The Giants defense really put on a show. On to this morning’s networking news!

• Cisco unveils talent push strategy - Cisco is pushing to really bring up it’s Indian market.
• AT&T data network fails for BlackBerry, iPhone users - Yikes…I’m with Verizon Wireless, and while pricey, can’t say I’ve experienced any problems in the 10 or so years I’ve been with them.
• BitTorrent Trend Suggests ISPs Need to Improve Networks - Discussion on BitTorrent and throttling.
• A wireless network think tank . . . with toys - Very cool wireless research lab put together by Rutgers University.

I’ll be working on the MPLS series this week, so definitely stay tuned.
