Traffic Policing

September 14th, 2007 neteng

I’ve decided to post my notes on traffic policing in the case that it may help others out! Hope someone out there finds it useful. I’ll be posting something later on traffic shaping as well. Be forewarned, these are all Work in Progress posts, so they may change from time to time. Click on the (more…) link below to view my notes.

QoS is my worst nightmare

September 13th, 2007 neteng

To paraphrase a Rambo quote:

Me:Who are you?
QoS: Your worst nightmare.

I’ve been having a hard time wrapping my head around certain aspects of QoS, mostly traffic shaping and policing. This business involving Committed Information Rate (CIR), Minimum CIR (mincir), Committed Burst (Bc), Excess Burst (Be), etc has been trying on my tiny little brain, to say the least! When it comes to concepts associated with OSPF, BGP, NAT, Multicast and so on, I seem to get through those with a modicum of understanding. But for some reason, QoS manages to be a real thorn in my side. I’m just hoping that by the time the CCIE lab rolls around, I’ll have had either a glorious revelation of comprehension or that the QoS section happens to be worth a minuscule amount of points.

Also, it doesn’t help that I’ve been following archived threads on the Groupstudy CCIE mailing list that say Cisco uses some of these terms differently, depending on what text you’re reading at the time. Oh well, I guess this is why CCIEs get paid the big bucks.
